We decided to be spontaneous and grab a quick dinner at Tejas tonight. Tejas is a long-standing southwestern restaurant located in the 50th and France area of Edina, MN. It has been around since 1987 and still seems to be as popular as ever.

We arrived early (5:30pm) without a reservation and were seated immediately. By 6:15 they were full and by 7:00 when we left, there was a long wait for a table. I would recommend making a reservation if you go. They are featured on Open Table.
They start the meal with some bread and their own trail mix. The flavors in the trail mix are nice but it is very difficult to eat. You can’t really eat it well with your hands because your hands get sticky. It is also very difficult to eat with a utensil. We tasted a raisin or two and decided to forego the rest. They should figure out a better system for this or at least come up with a way to make it less sticky.
We tried the table-side Guacamole. The server did a nice job of explaining the preparation. It was good although the chips were too greasy for my taste.
Tejas is offering a nice selection of fresh fish specials that I believe change daily. I tried the Tuna with figs, grapefruit and mixed greens. It was nicely prepared, seared rare. My piece had a bit of gristle making it somewhat difficult to cut with my knife. What perplexed me was the fact that the dish wasn’t very southwestern. I would classify it as “Californian”
The other fish selections looked good. I had my eye on the Day Boat Halibut and the Diver Scallops. I made the mistake of ordering a glass of Rioja . While the wine was nice it went horribly with my dish. Completely my fault…chalk that one up to “what was I thinking?” The Rioja would have been much better with the halibut they were offering. Grapefruit and Rioja….what was I thinking?
My wife (who is currently pregnant) ordered a burger. She had a craving. She reports that it was good. My son ordered mac and cheese and yes it was the Kraft variety. My big complaint about his dinner is the fact that they brought him a scorching hot bowl. If he had touched it he would have burned himself.
The server also suggested a tasting menu option. It featured a soup, main course and dessert for $18. Service was very good.
Tejas is a nice option for a more sophisticated Southwestern fare. Parking is easy and free in one of the many lots around the restaurant.
