Dining For Sport

Peninsula Restaurant – Minneapolis

A friend of mine took me to this restaurant for lunch the other day. Definitely a place that I would go back to and try for dinner. They say the cuisine is Malaysian which for us minnesota people really translates to interesting Thai-like food with an indonesian influence.

There are some familiar things on the menu like Pad Thai and Green Curry. But I was also seeing some more adventurous items coming out of the kitchen. Looked like some whole fish preparations. The menu is huge and there were a lot of fish and vegetarian options, along with a variety of meat choices.

On a recommendation from my friend, I played it safe and ordered the Green Curry with Chicken. The dish was possibly one of the best Asian meals I have had in the Twin Cities. The chicken was not over cooked and the sauce was spicy, complex and flavorful. It was also light and not too greasy. Very enjoyable. What appeared to be fresh shelled peas was a nice touch along with some asian eggplant. Not the standard “stir fry” vegetables.

The downside was that we had to get up and go to the front of the restaurant to get the host’s attention in order to receive our bill. My friend said that his Pad Thai (he played it safe too) was just OK.

I am going back to try more options for dinner. I suspect the service will be more attentive.
